Default The basic of chess (Lesson 1)

"Welcome members, the upcoming lessons designed for our begginer members in order to understand the basic concepts of chess."

First of all, chess is played on a square borad called a chessboard. The game has only two players (white, and black. white play first, and the colors are chosen either by a friendly agreement, or by a tournament director), each player control 16 pieces consists of: 1 king, 1 queen, 2 rooks, 2 bishops, 2 knights, and finally 8 pawns for each player. The main objective of the game is to checkmate the king. (attack the king and it cant be moved anywhere). Ofcourse, to checkmate the king you need to develop startigies (discussed in the chess tactics/startigies forum).

Now lets talk about the chessborad. It has eight rows with numbers from 1-8, and eight colums denoted with letters from a-h. The squares on the chessborad are usually white and black.

The chessborad looks something like this:

Now lets talk about each piece:

1)King: The king can move one square horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. There is a special move for the king called castling and its only allowed once per game. Castling, means moving the king two squares towards a rook, then placing the rook on the far side of the king. But castling can be permitted only if the following conditions exist:

a)The king or the rook never been moved.
b)The king never been checked (attacked).
c)The king during castling will not pass or placed in a check position.

The king moves as follows:

Continue..

Queen: can move any number of vacant squares diagonally, horizontally, or vertically; The most powerfull piece. Try not to use it at the beginning of the game in order not to be attacked.

Hrere's of how the queen moves:

Rook:The rook is the second most powerful piece. It can move any number of spaces up, down, left, or right. It can move to any square along its file or row as long as its path is not blocked.

Bishop: Moves in straight lines on diagonals. They can cross the board in one move as long as no piece is in its way. They can also stop anywhere along the way.

Knight: Is the only piece that may jump over other pieces. It moves 5 spaces in an L shape. At the beginning of the game when many pieces are on the board, the knight's ability to jump over pieces makes it very valuable.

Pawn: Is the least powerful piece. It may move only one space forward if its path is not blocked. On each pawn's first move, it may move one or two spaces forward. The pawn may not move backwards but my move one space diagonally to capture an opponents piece.

Thanks for your attention..
