A simple and smart puzzle

hi everyone

A friend of mine was walking around, suddenly he found himself alone in the middle of nowhere. but he also have a map, by looking at the map he recognize that he can reach his house with a shorter way, his map imply that he should: walk 5 km to east, 3 to north, 6 to east, 2 north, 2 west, 1 south and 1 to the east.

Do you think he can reach his house by taking a shorter way? how many KM, he will pass in this new way?

umm i think he'll travel 20Km, but he wont reach his house because he's in a middle of nowhere
